Chapter Three
How often could anyone say they looked forward to a Monday? Because this week she did, from the time her eyes opened first thing in the morning to the bus she got on to make her way to work. Ordinarily, the oncoming end of the quarter would have been what made her smile, but today, it was looking forward to the unknown.
Today was the last day of classes, and she realized she still had to make up a final for one of them. She still had two days, plenty of time, but this wasnât like her. She usually had all her exams made up long in advance, just in case.
On the way to Denny Hall she ran into Ned Ferrer, who looked insufferably pleased with himself, but then he often looked that way. They greeted each other, and he looked at her for a moment, as if to remind himself who she was. But she was used to that from him too. âAndrea! Looking forward to the end of the quarter?â he asked inanely, but that wasnât unusual either.
âWho isnât?â she replied, almost equally inanely, but she had a certain number of replies she reserved for higher-ups and senior staff, and she wasnât going to deviate from them, not right then.
But then Ned seemed to remember why he knew her, because he asked, âYou know Gray Reiss, right, Dr. Maris? Astra?â
She had to be rising in his estimation, because he actually remembered her first name on his second try. It really was a topsy-turvy Monday. âI do,â she said, smiling as politely as she could. She wondered if she would have that same vaguely smug smile when she finally got to the same level of tenureship, or if it was a talent that came naturally to Ned.
âDid you want to observe the class heâs going to be speaking in front of? I donât know if youâve talked to him about that.â
âWhen is the class, for summer quarter?â she asked, sidestepping any explanation she didnât feel like making. She was having a good Monday, and she was going to make sure that didnât change. âIâm already scheduled for finals.â
âGraduate seminar,â Ned said. âNext month. I figure there may be some interest in it beyond the business department, so I was getting an idea of room size, letting the department do some publicity.â
âSure,â she said. âIâll be there. Iâve never attended a seminar in which the presenterâs been fawned over by The Wall Street Journal.â
The last day of the quarter was usually a mess to clean up, particularly for introductory courses. Her intro to linguistical anthropology class was big enough she had to have two grad students to help her, answering any question from panicked undergrads that should have been answered through the entire quarterâbut of course, the students posing the questions now had never bothered to ask. She also had to make clear what the finals would coverâthat is, everything she taught and had emphasized over the past ten weeksâand when it would be.
